Figure 3 summarizes annual percentage growth in carbon emissions by end-use from 1990 to 2010 for the residential sector. For comparison, the arrows on each graph show the annual growth rate for all end-uses together and the annualized growth rate in number of households. End-uses with growth rates larger than those of the building stock are becoming increasingly energy intensive over time, while those with growth rates lower than those of the building stock are becoming less energy intensive over time. Miscellaneous electricity has by far the highest annual growth rate in the residential sector.
