Policy Context

The Energy Star program encourages manufacturers to voluntarily incorporate power saving features into personal computers, monitors, printers, copiers, and fax machines in exchange for allowing manufacturers to use the EPA Energy Star logo in their advertising campaigns (see Table 1).

  • Before Energy Star, the energy efficiency of office equipment was virtually ignored.
  • President Clinton's executive order required the federal government to purchase Energy Star PCs, monitors and printers.
  • Energy savings in the field have fallen somewhat short of the full potential, but education and modifications of the agreements with manufacturers are overcoming this problem.
