Jim Lutz is a mechanical engineer with 18 years of professional experience.  He is in the Forecasting group within the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He works primarily on the efficiency of water heaters and hot water distribution systems. He was the lead author of the Technical Support Document for the updated NAECA energy efficiency standards for residential water heaters issued in 2001. He is active in ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) as a member on the Standards Committee, Service Water Heating Technical Committee and the chair of the Standards Project Committee to revise the test method for residential water heaters.  He is a professional engineer and licensed building contractor in California.  He has Bachelors degrees in Engineering Science and Sociology.
